breaking news this morning on the shooting death of a former navy s.e.a.l. known as the deadliest sniper in u.s. history. 38-year-old chris kyle was killed yesterday along with a second man at a gun range near ft. worth, texas. these are pictures of kyle taken from the security company he founded after leaving the navy. the gunman accused of killing kyle has been identified as eddie ray routh. he is in custody facing two counts of capital murder. earlier i spoke with one of kyle's friends, jason kos, about the man he called a war hero. >> he and a friend took a marine that was suffering from ptsd to a gun range to shoot and as a way that he always did giving back and, you know, it was certainly him taking his time to help, again, help war heroes. >> he had quite a reputation in the field as one of the most lethal snipers out there. how did he handle that? >> you know, he viewed, chris viewed it as his job and he was protecting his brothers, frankly. he as a man was quite contrary to that because he was incredibly loving father and charismatic and really caring person. so, it's quite a co

is live at the navy yard station with the story. kind of a chilly night for a walk home, delia. >> reporter: and folks walked several miles home. they said it was a better way to get home because the shuttle buses, well, there just weren't enough of them. so a lot of them just trekked in the cold several miles to their homes. and it took several hours. the problem started here at navy yard. two metro green line trains did not get to their destination. and it took them two hours to get there. it was a terrible commute for those passengers. and they took pictures and tweeted out those pictures and sent messages of those massive crowds after folks pried open the metro doors to escape through an emergency exit. they took to walking on the tracks after sitting in a hot, dark train stuck in a tunnel between navy yard and anacostia for hours. metro says the problem started with an electrical fire but proper protocol was not followed. >> it was hot and people was passing out. someone opened the emergency exit. we jumped out into the -- through the rails and ran to the nearest emergency

melanie alnwick is live at the navy yard station in southeast this morning with the latest. >> reporter: metro is apologizing to passengers foren inconvenience after yesterday's mess and it will hold a debriefing with fire department officials this morning to try to figure out what happened and to prevent it from happening again. d.c. fire trucks and ambulances converged on the anacostia and navy yard stations in the middle of the evening rush hour. there was smoke in the tunnel. metro called firefighters to check on what it called an arcing insulator, a part of the third rail that is generating smoke due to wayward electrical current. firefighters cut power to two trains and that left a lot of riders stuck. passengers were sitting on hot, dark trains not getting much direction they say. one says the conductor told them there was a fire on the track and when the lights went out, people panicked. >> we were on there. women started passing out. somebody had an asthma attack. >> i hit the emergency exit button. that is the center door and it opened up. i proceeded to walk down

at navy yard with more on what went wrong and how they're hoping to move forward from this. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning. it was a failure to communicate simply. that's what it boils down to. a problem that could have been fixed fairly quickly took two hours to address and sent lots of people out here flooding the streets outside of navy yard station. a lot of them actually walked home that night. passengers tweeted out pictures of wednesday night's event. it happened around 5:00 in the evening. two green line trains got stuck in opportunity hims between navy yard and anacostia stations. metro says the problem started with a fire in an insulator that keeps power in the third track from energizing the other two. an employee cut off the power to address the problem but that employee never told anyone else. >> it was hot and people were passing out. someone opened the emergency exit. we ran to the nearest emergency excite. >> that kind of communication, we would have recovered faster. we'll look at the precise events. >> reporter: the investigation is ongoing. i ha

veterans, one a former navy s.e.a.l., chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield were shot and killed in ft. worth texas. the man who pulled the trigger is a veteran who kyle may have been trying to help with ptsd. susan candiotti joins us live with more. what do we know about how this happened? >> well, got some brand new information during the press conference. first of all, we learned about an alleged confession. and police say they think they also have found the murder weapon, when they describe as a semiautomatic handgun that was found at the suspect's house. let's back up a little bit. after the double shooting at that gun lodge, police say the suspected shooter who's 25-year-old eddie ray ralph took off in kyle's pickup truck. then they said that he went to his sister's house and told her and his brother what had happened, and then left that house. that's when the sister called the police. police put out an all points bulletin and tracked ralph, the suspect to his own house. now, the home was ringed, according to what one police lieutenant told me, with at least a dozen police off
